Being yourself Vs Fitting in

It is human nature to try to fit in any environment we are in.  If we are in workspaces where there is micromanaging, autocratic behavior and just no respect for human beings, we try to fit into that culture as well. We try to change our true nature to be successful in such jobs. But is that the right way to be?  Is being successful at a job more important than being true to yourself and your nature.

The negative behaviors I have described above become embedded in the culture. It starts at the top management and rolls down to every other employee. Consider leaders who are very shortsighted and constantly just thinks about short term success and financial goals. The leaders are not thinking about developing individuals. Every small mistake is penalized at the mid management levels which leads the mid management to be very critical and micromanaging at the staff level.

Some people adjust really well in some circumstances and succeed even in such negative environment. Some folks complain and just put up with the bad management, because changing would require a lot of effort. There is another way to go about this.  Stay true to who you are even when the environment is bad.  You may not last very long in such a negative environment, but very soon atleast you will find a place that rings true to your real personality.  After all isn't success all about finding out who we truly are and becoming more of ourselves? Let me know your thoughts!
